European Winter X-Games in Tignes
Once again the weather forecast was a mile off, and we experienced glorious sunshine all day. /the conditions were perfect for day two of the European Winter X-Games.
The X-Games in Tignes kicked off with practice rounds throughout Wednesday morning, and the first final that evening. The Men’s Skiing Super-Pipe was the event and the level of competition was extremely high. The two favourites were clearly the French boys, Kevin Rolland from the neighbouring resort of La Plagne, and the local boy from Tignes, Xavier Bertoni. Another big name in this even was Simon Dumont from the USA. The French cleaned up the event with Rolland in first, and Bertoni in second much to the crowds delight. This was a great event to watch with some amazing tricks being pulled.
Today the Men’s Slope-style final took place at midday under the shining sun. Travice Rice, Andreas Wiig and Mikkel Bang were some of the big names taking to the slopes for the competition. Eric Willet took the gold medal pulling some amazing corked spins. Sage Kotsenburg took silver with Marco Grilc in bronze. Travis Rice was, surprisingly, down in 7th place.
The event in the evening was the Women’s Super with the Australian Torah Bright in second place and American, Kaitlyn Farrington, taking the gold with a switch nine.
Tomorrow is the big one with four finals taking place, and rumours flying around that the legendary Shaun White will be turning up for a slope-style demonstration.
The Women’s Ski Slope-Style takes place at half nine in the morning tomorrow. The Women’s Snowboard Slope-Style takes place at half eleven with the only British Rider in the competition, Jenny Jones taking to the slopes to compete. Jenny is one of the favourites to win and I’m sure all the British seasonaires will be there to support her.
Lunch time is when the Men’s Skiing Slope-Style takes place, with the American wonder kid, Bobby Brown heading up the competition along with TJ Schiller, also of the USA. This will be a very intense event, and I know, from seeing some of the riders at the London Freeze competition, that it will be well worth watching.
The Women’s Skiing Super-Pipe is at four in the afternoon with the likes of Sarah Burke from Canada dropping into the pipe to show off their skills. This is followed by the big event of the competition, the Men’s Snowboard Super-Pipe final. Shaun White normally dominates this event, but as he is not on the start list, the competition has been opened up completely.
I think the majority of support over here will be for the French man, Matthieu Crepel, the number one French snowboarder at the moment. I am really looking forward to this event as the competition will be intense, and the level of riding extremely high. The Women’s Snowboard Super-Pipe is good, but the Men are amazing in the pipe. I was disappointed not to see Shaun White on the start list, but hopefully rumours of his demonstration are true.
If you’re in Espace Killy this week I’d definitely suggest heading over to watch the competition, and if not, you can catch all the finals on the TV. It is free to get into the competition grounds or you can watch from the slopes.
During the day there are also extreme Snow-Mobile demonstrations which are fantastic to watch and involve back-flips and no-hand jumps!
If you’re not into this kind of thing though, the slopes are empty and the skiing is fantastic, it’s a good week to be skiing as everyone seems to be watching the competition. The unexpected sunshine also makes the slopes a great place to be whether spectating or just skiing,
This is an amazing week to be out here so make the most of it and have an amazing holiday!
