Skier dies in Gorges de Malpasset

Whilst skiing off-piste with his family and a guide, the father of the family fell through a snow-bridge and died in the icy waters below.

At 16:40 the alert was given by the guide leading the group towards le Fornet that one of the party had fallen through a snow bridge into a gorge below.
The Gorges de Malpasset area lies above Val d'Isere and is normally only skied in the spring-time as the gorges are safe once filled in with avalanches.

The Frenchman aged 46 fell into icy waters in an area where rescue efforts proved very demanding, three helicopters and a 10 strong rescue team could only pull out the lifeless body.
