Ellie Mahoney

Senior Content Editor

Ellie is our in-house mountain bike guru and is a self-confessed grammar and punctuation policewoman, which is no surprise given the amount of content she edits and writes on a daily basis!

Originally from the Lake District but now based in the French Alps, she likes nothing better at weekends than getting out on her mountain bike exploring, quite often under the guise of updating mountain bike trail and guide information in each of our destinations.. it's a tough job but someone has to do it! Ellie has a penchant for seafood, so wherever she travels she's sure to try and find a restaurant that serves shellfish, or failing that a spicy Thai curry.

She can appreciate a good photo and has a minor addiction to National Geographic both for the photography, the articles and to keep up to date with new archaeological stories. Ellie studied archaeology at university and as a result keeps an eye out for places to visit that our readers of an archaeological disposition might be interested in.

Destinations visited

Peru, Bilbao, Rome, Barcelona, Malta, Houston USA, Florence, Poland, Amsterdam, Brussels, Northern Ireland, Guernsey, Switzerland, Milan, Tuscany and too many places in France to mention them all..

Favourite destinations

Since half of my family hail from Malta, I've got a bit of a soft spot for the Island and have been there countless times over the years. I love its prehistoric temples, now listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, and visiting there so often is probably why I'm such a fan of seafood.

Another favourite is Rome, again for the archaeology, the sights, sounds and atmosphere. It's definitely somewhere I'll be going back to at some point. I had a great trip to Barcelona too so I'd definitely recommend going there for the tapas, the cool café culture, the street art and the sea.

Travel inspiration

I get most of my travel inspiration from places with interesting archaeological sites that I'd like to visit, as well as mountain biking destinations - I'm not much of a beach holiday kind of girl..

Memorable travel experience

Mountain biking in Peru has to be my biggest solo trip and most memorable to date. I went with the intention of taking part in a mass start race at altitude called the "Inca Avalanche" and rode for a week preceding the race with a local guide. It's the furthest I've ever been on my own or with my bike and the riding there was incredible.. super long single track trails, Inca ruins around every corner, stunning scenery and friendly people. An all round amazing experience.

Top tips

On mountain biking trips always take someone with you that can do repairs to things that you don't know how to fix.. you never know when something technical is going to break part way through a trip. Never leave your passport in your hotel room. Pack light, travel faster.. I once came back from a camping / MTB trip through Italy with all the things I'd travelled in a friends car with.. carrying far too much stuff really slows you down and made for getting on and off trains a nightmare!

Favourite places to drink

I'm a self-confessed red wine snob, so if it doesn't sell a decent, full bodied red, I'm not normally interested.. although I'm easily swayed by a good strawberry dacquiri!

Find My Bar

Favourite places to eat

Anywhere that sells seafood will instantly catch my eye, or a good rare steak with creamy sauces. Querky cafés are always fun - ones with mis-matched kitsch furniture and good, strong coffee and maybe the occasional slice of home made cakes..

Book My Restaurant

Favourite places to stay

I'll hunt out a good bargain wherever I can, and I'm partial to a bit of camping from time to time, sometimes more back of the car glamping and sometimes it's just me, my mountain bike and the bare essentials.

Sports & activities

Mountain biking has to be my number one activity, with a mixture of kayaking, hiking and snowboarding thrown in for good measure. I don't like sitting around on beaches on holiday, I'd much rather be on a jeep safari or discovering what the destination has to offer from my saddle.
