La Fruitiere at La Folie Douce restaurant review

A delicious dining experience on the pistes in Val d'Isere

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Erin Moulding, Val d'Isere Reporter Updated

Of all the mountain restaurants in the Espace Killy, La Fruitiere might just be the best I’ve encountered in my time here. With its fantastic location at the top of the La Daille bubble, amazing piste side views, top music and entertainment from La Folie Douce right next door, it is the place to take lunch on the mountain.

Sitting on the sun terrace, working on your goggle tan, and soaking up the amazing mountain atmosphere really is one of the best ways to spend your lunch. As you arrive to La Fruitiere you are hit with the smell of home cooked, belly warming food and the rustic, shabby chic look that makes it so appealing.

Even though it was almost 3pm the terrace was still in full sun and buzzing with skiers relaxing after a big lunch. We were greeted with a welcoming smile and seated at a table almost straight away.

Looking through their simple yet satisfying menu I was spoilt for choice, from traditional Savoyard cheese boards to a homely beef stew I found it hard to decide what to go for. As there was three of us we opted for different things so that we could taste as much of the delicious menu as possible. We chose the roast pork, a beef stew with carrots and the steak with reblochon mash and I must say that not one part of any dish disappointed in any way.

Within what felt like a matter of minutes, the food was being placed in front of us and the sights and smells were enough to make my mouth water. Eager to take my first bite I cut in to my steak, which was cooked to perfection, smothered it in mash, dunked it in the homemade sauce and then topped it with roasted garlic - an amazing combination.

It was everything I had imagined and so much more, every flavour coming through with a punch and satisfying my stomach to the max! The beef stew was enough to feed two, arriving in a large metal pan to keep the heat in, the beef fell apart in your mouth and satisfied any craving you might have been having for a home cooked English meal. The roast pork looked as good as it tasted and all the flavours of the slow cooking came through with the cabbage balancing out the saltiness perfectly.

If you have any room left for dessert then you can treat yourself to the delightful selection on offer. With lemon meringue and chocolate fondant on the menu, it is hard to resist so why not just indulge, you’re on holiday after all!

Once you have finished eating you can sit back with a full, happy tummy and enjoy the view and mountain entertainment. At 4pm the music in La Folie Douce comes in to the restaurant and you can join the party from your table and start your après off to one of the best parties in the Alps. The staff work with such efficiency and focus that no one gets forgotten.

La Fruitiere is a little more pricey than your average mountain restaurant however in my opinion it is worth every cent that you pay. For what you get and considering that you are almost 3000 meters up a snowy mountain, it will knock your ski socks off and will be a definite highlight of your holiday.

So with the combination of incredible, freshly cooked food, unlike so many of the other restaurant you find piste side, fantastic atmosphere, with the party going on right next door from 3pm, a great sun trap that you can enjoy all afternoon, friendly and fast service, it is possibly the best place to dine on the mountain and an absolute must for your holiday in Val d’Isere or Tignes.
