Fantastic skiing still to be had in Val d'Isere

Spring snow & mixed weather this week

The Val d’Isere/Tignes combination never lets you down and this weekend was no exception. The resort is tracked off-piste yet we still managed to enjoy a fantastic few days of skiing.

On Friday we ‘skinned’ to the Glacier Pers at the Fornet and had some soft winter snow to leave our tracks in followed by some lovely soufflé from the Grand Torsai down. We avoided another trip through the Gorge du Malpasset as it’s getting a little tricky and not worth the risk at the moment.

On Saturday we ended up ‘skinning’ for ten-minutes in the Sachette in Tignes and skied 10cm’s of powder as well as some good spring snow, which added up to a pretty good result. My colleague Thomas took a family to Bonneval on Saturday, which is a great day out topped off by returning to Val d’Isere by helicopter.

Sunday was a very uninspiring day with a forecast of flat-light without any new snow to work with. The cloud cover would stop the spring slopes from softening and our options were going to be very limited, but the sun popped out unexpectedly and followed us around all morning long. With the bonus of some sunshine we ended up having a fantastic morning skiing steep slopes on northern exposures and it rounded off another great weekend of skiing.

The avalanche risk has been 1/5 for most of the weekend so the mountain doesn’t really get any more stable than it is at the moment. At 1/5 you are pretty safe unless you try skiing the sunny slopes late in the day, and the risk can go back up very quickly with high temperatures, high winds or fresh snowfalls, or any combination of these factors. Some precipitation is forecast this week so do be aware.

The piste skiing was brilliant as well over the weekend, especially Saturday, which is the main change-over day. Saturday is always the best day for piste skiing as the pistes are empty and it’s a good reason to try to travel on Sundays if at all possible.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag next week as far as the forecast goes.

  • Monday- Partially sunny/light rain -7C/+5C Wind from W at 10 gusting to 45km/h
  • Tuesday- light rain -4C/+5C Wind from the NW at 5km/h
  • Wednesday- Partially sunny -3C/+8C Wind from the S at 5km/h
  • Thursday- Partially sunny/light rain 0C/+10C Wind from the S at 5km/h
  • Friday-Partially sunny/light rain -1C/+11C Wind from the NW at 5km/h

Monday could be a little wild as 45km/h of wind in the village usually means some pretty strong winds higher up the mountain. Don’t let the forecast rain get you down as rain in the village means snow further up the mountain and the off-piste is in desperate need of a fresh canvas. Anything falling out of the sky is good news so fingers crossed that we receive some sort of precipitation!

Have a brilliant week and stay tuned for another update on Friday. Remember the link to my blog below if you want to stay in touch with conditions on a daily basis. Have fun!
